Mending Walls: The Conversation & Coffee Table Book
The year 2020 was a difficult year for the world. In the midst of a global pandemic , America was faced with another brutal killing of a black man at the hands of the police, which set off an uprising that filled our streets with voices of objection, to the systemic racism here in America. With the community’s emotions heightened and our demands now physically on Richmond City walls through tags, these expressions leave and mark a space for questions and conversations to happen. These actions inspired the artist Hamilton Glass to pull together over 30 artist in the City of Richmond start the Mending Walls project.
Our book tells the story of Mending Walls through pictures captured by our photographers, Brenda Soque and Katrina Taggart- Hecksher. Brenda and Katrina captured the first to the final stroke of paint laid on the walls by the Mending Walls artists and watched each mural come to life from beginning to end. The book shares the stories of the murals through interviews of our Mending Walls artist. This is an intimate look into the project through the artists’ perspectives. They will share what inspired them and stories about the process and progress of each wall and story of their healing journey though Mending Walls and their partnerships.
