“Reflection for Change” was created to amplify the voices and thoughts of the 9 young individuals who are part of Rise for youth in the summer of 2021. Courtney Lebow and Hamilton had the opportunity of meeting with the group and digging in with this about their experiences as young leaders in these times to reflect on how their experiences are shaping the work they are doing it their community.
In their talks with the youth, the reoccurring theme of reflections stood out as something that was important to the way the organization influenced the community surrounding them. The Rise for youth organization is focused on dismantling the school to prison pipe line by working hard on legislation, and also by setting an example for other youth and showing in them what they are capable of through action.
With this theme being at the for front, Courtney and Hamilton took direct quotes from the 9 members asking them to finish the question: "When I see myself..." (What do I see?). Their faces and answers are boldly displayed on the mural as a positive example and reflection of all the work Rise For Youth has done over the years and continues to do. The quotes and voices of these young activists are the central theme of importance for this mural. For example, one quote reads "I am young, black, and full of potential". This strong message shows the viewers that these youth are the future of our community. Rise for Youth will continue to work to dismantle the school to prison pipeline, meanwhile they are showing the world and themselves that they can do anything they put their minds to.
